The Association for the Study of Food and Society and the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society invite interested scholars and practitioners to engage with the idea of knowing food. How do we know what we know and what do we do with that knowledge? We especially seek papers that highlight under-represented people and cultures. In addition to papers, panels, posters and roundtables, we particularly encourage experiential sessions in which the material and the intellectual, theoretical and practical can overtly intersect. Boston University has two teaching kitchens which you may request for experiential sessions.
Each presenter will be limited to no more than two sessions, to include no more than one paper presentation. For example, you may appear on a roundtable and a panel or a panel and a creative workshop.
We welcome session proposals from a wide range of topics including, but not limited to the intersection of food and/or agriculture with:
- Community, markets, and economy
- Farmers and food system labor
- Food sovereignty and justice
- Food systems and scales
- Identity and intersectionality
- Policy and governance
- Power (including concentration and consolidation)
- Social Movements
- Sustainability and resilience
We welcome proposals for the following types of sessions:
- Roundtable: Host a conversation on a topic with a group of stakeholders or experts as panelists
- Lightning Talk: A 3-5 minute presentation
- Poster: Share a poster that describes a research project or program
- Exploration gallery: Interact with attendees at a table where you can share materials or engage with a sensorium.
- Paper session: Organize a group of papers.
- Paper presentation: A standard 15-20 minute academic presentation
- Kitchen Session: Use a commercial teaching kitchen or a demonstration kitchen to host a tasting, demonstration, or hands-on workshop. Please note that organizers are responsible for covering the costs of food and supplies. Indicate which kind of kitchen you will need.
- Creative Workshops: A session in which participants engage in an activity together to further their understanding of foodways and/or food systems
Standard review deadline: November 19, 2022
Late review deadline: January 15, 2023
For standard review submissions, authors will be notified of acceptance by mid December 2022. For late review submissions, authors will be notified of acceptance by early March 2023. All presenters must be registered for the conference by April 15, 2023 to be included in the program.
