Our last, but perhaps most famous, winner of this year’s SAFN Anthropology Day Photo Contest is none other than Carole Counihan, who comes in third place. Professor emerita at Millersville University, editor of Food and Foodways, and author of many books and journals, she has also participated in the SAFN food anthropology video series, which you can watch here.
You can view the first and second place winners’ photos here.
The judges were impressed with the storytelling that came through these photos. They noted that viewers could feel swept up in the visits that are depicted. The inclusion of little details, like the cigarette dangling from the forager’s mouth, also contributed to a sense of being there.
In an email, Professor Counihan provided a little more context for the photos:
I took these photos in and near Cagliari (Sardinia), Italy, in April 2013 as part of the fieldwork for my book “Italian Food Activism in Urban Sardinia” (Bloomsbury 2019). The photos depict the work of the forager Bastiano and his relationship to the Cagliari “Open Circle” Solidarity Purchase Group or GAS (Gruppo d’acquisto solidale). GAS consist of consumers who unite to purchase organic and local foods directly from small producers with a commitment to paying fair prices and developing enduring relationships. The GAS built solidarity through consumers’ visits to producers and producers’ presence at urban markets.
