SAFN Anthro Day Photo Contest Winner, part 2

David Beriss

As I noted in my previous post, we had a tie for the winner of this year’s SAFN Anthropology Day Photo Contest. The tie is between Harleen Bal (UC Davis) and Nikhit Agrawal (UCLA). You can see Harleen Bal’s photos here.

Our other first place winner, Nikhit Agrawal, is a PhD candidate in anthropology at UCLA. He also co-founded (with Saroj Choudhary) the ZealGrit Foundation, a non-profit in Bihar, India, focused on the health and nutrition of young women. He writes that “my partner and I co-founded the nonprofit to use our collective social and cultural capital to bring attention and support to one of the most marginalized regions in India, Triveniganj, which is also my hometown.”

The judges called these photos “brilliant” and were intrigued by the story they tell. They commented on the beautiful compositions, and on the invocation of people, ritual, and food. One remarked that these photos had the “best combination of visual interest and culturally meaningful moments.” Congratulations, Nikhit!
