ATTN SAFN MEMBERS: Plan and submit your sessions for the joint 2023 American Anthropology Association/The Canadian Anthropology Association/société canadienne d’anthropologie Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada!

The time has come to start planning and submitting sessions for the annual AAA meeting.

The meeting will be held November 15-19, 2023 in Toronto. The theme is Transitions.

Toronto promises to be a fun and productive meeting, as we will be gathering together in person like in years past, but also continuing with the hybrid format this year. SAFN’s AAA Program Committee and Executive Board look forward to putting together a great program for our members – but we need your help. Please begin organizing your oral presentation sessions, roundtables, gallery sessions, installations, and workshops! Here is the general call with a description of submission types.

First you should decide which format you will be engaged with: In person, Synchronous Online, or Asynchronous Online. Here is a PDF flow chart to help. The portal to submit is now open. When you submit, please select SAFN as your review section. Here are details on the peer review process.

Submission Timeline:

  • Submissions must be started by Wednesday, March 22.
  • Submitters will have one additional week (Wednesday, March 29) to finalize and submit their proposals.

Invited and Co-Sponsored Sessions

We will consider all sessions submitted to SAFN for Invited status. We have frequently co-sponsored sessions with related sections such as Culture and Agriculture and the Society for Medical Anthropology. We would welcome any suggestions you might have for co-sponsorships, as these tend to increase the audience size and diversity of interests.

Organizing sessions vs. individually volunteered papers

We encourage you to take advantage of the AAA Communities and other listservs to organize a session or find a session for your individual contributions. The SAFN committee will do its best to organize individually volunteered papers into panels for review – but our experience is that organized panels are more cohesive and better attended.

Participation Rules

A reminder that you will need to be a member of either AAA or CASCA and register for the meeting in order to present at the Annual Meeting. Also, individuals can only present one major (Presenter) role plus one secondary (Discussant) role per meeting. There are no limits on minor roles (Organizer/Chair). An individual may appear on up to two asynchronous/pre-recorded sessions, regardless of role.

All submission details can be found here— but please feel free to reach out to us if you have questions.
